SandHills Stock Show & Rodeo Announces Leadership Transition
The SandHills Stock Show & Rodeo has announced a leadership transition as longtime President Jim Wise steps away from the role after decades of dedicated service to the organization. Gary Don McCain has been elected as the new President of the SandHills Stock Show & Rodeo.
Wise helped guide SandHills through a period of tremendous growth while continuing to champion the western heritage and traditions that have defined the organization for more than 90 years. During his tenure, SandHills strengthened its scholarship efforts, helped establish the Gold Buckle Scholarship Foundation, expanded sponsorship relationships, and continued building community partnerships that allowed the event to grow into one of the premier rodeos and stock shows in the region.
Known for his humble leadership style, Wise often worked behind the scenes to support volunteers, committees, contestants, sponsors, and rodeo personnel. He also played a key role in securing tourism support and helping position SandHills as a profitable event that continues to give back to the community and future generations.
“Jim Wise has been an incredible leader for SandHills and someone who truly embodies service,” the organization said in a statement. “His dedication, vision, and steady leadership helped shape SandHills into what it is today. While he is stepping away from the role of president, he will forever remain part of the fabric of this organization.”
Wise will continue supporting the organization and its events moving forward. McCain now steps into the role after serving for several decades as Vice President of Rodeo. Throughout his time with SandHills, McCain has helped preserve and strengthen the rodeo’s longstanding legacy while helping welcome elite PRCA athletes, stock contractors, rodeo personnel, veterans, rookies, breakaway ropers, and team ropers to Odessa each year.
Known for his hands-on leadership style, McCain has long been a fixture behind the scenes at SandHills — whether opening gates, running chutes, assisting with arena operations, or supporting the many moving parts that make the rodeo successful. McCain has also helped strengthen SandHills’ partnership with Odessa College while continuing to focus on the organization’s mission of supporting youth, education, and western heritage.
“Gary Don McCain represents the heart of SandHills,” the organization said. “His commitment to rodeo, the contestants, volunteers, sponsors, and fans has been unwavering for decades. We are excited for the future of SandHills under his leadership as we continue building on the tradition and excellence that has defined this event for generations.”
The SandHills Stock Show & Rodeo has been a staple of Odessa and West Texas since 1933 and remains one of the region’s premier celebrations of western heritage, agriculture, and professional rodeo competition.
OUR HISTORY
Our 2020 stock show brought 614 entries from across Texas. There were Hereford heifers and steers, fine wool lambs, and market goats. The SandHills Steer Show is the only Junior Livestock Show in the state of Texas which is exclusively Hereford cattle. Likewise, our Lamb Show is unique in that we show only Fine Wool Lambs. Because of this, the quality of the steers and lambs shown in Odessa rivals any show in the state. In addition to the prizes and premiums awarded in our shows and our sale, participating students also compete for scholarships.
